What to Do During a Power Cut: A Tamil Nadu Survival Guide
6 September 2026 · MyEB
Power cuts are a fact of life in Tamil Nadu — scheduled TNEB maintenance most weeks, and the odd unplanned outage on a hot afternoon. A cut of two or three hours doesn't have to be miserable. With a little preparation and a few simple habits, you can ride one out comfortably. Here's a practical guide for before, during, and after.
Before the cut: 10 minutes of prep
The single biggest thing that makes a power cut easy is knowing it's coming. Most TNEB cuts are announced the day before. Check your area's schedule the night before (that's what MyEB is for), and then:
- Charge everything. Phones, power banks, laptops, the emergency light — top them all up while you have power.
- Store water. If you rely on a motor pump, fill buckets and drinking water before the cut, since the pump won't run.
- Cool the room. On a hot day, pre-cool with the AC/fan and close curtains to trap the cool air.
- Plan cooking. Finish anything that needs the mixer, induction stove, or oven beforehand.

During the cut: stay comfortable and safe
- Keep the fridge shut. A closed fridge keeps food safe for 4+ hours. Opening it repeatedly is the fastest way to spoil food.
- Use a rechargeable fan and light instead of candles — safer, brighter, and no fire risk. A charged emergency light covers most cuts easily.
- Conserve phone battery. Drop to low-power mode; you don't know exactly how long the cut will last.
- Unplug sensitive electronics. When power returns it can come back with a surge — TVs, computers, and the fridge are worth unplugging or putting behind a surge protector.
Staying cool in summer cuts
Tamil Nadu's afternoon cuts in April–June are the hardest. A few tricks: sit in the coolest room (usually ground floor, away from west-facing walls), use a wet cloth on the neck, keep hydrated, and a rechargeable fan makes a genuine difference. If you have an inverter, a fan + light on backup turns a rough cut into a non-event.
After power returns
- Turn heavy appliances back on one at a time — switching everything at once can trip your MCB.
- Check the fridge — food is usually fine after a short cut, but use judgment on anything that felt warm.
- Reset clocks and timers on ovens, ACs, and water heaters if needed.
When a cut lasts too long
Scheduled maintenance cuts almost always end on time. If power is out well beyond the announced window, or an unplanned outage drags on, you can report it to TNEB — see our TNEB complaint guide for the helpline numbers and the fastest way to raise it. You can also check the MyEB live map to see if neighbours are reporting the same outage.
The one habit that changes everything
Everything above gets easier when you're not surprised. Knowing a cut is scheduled — the night before — turns "the power's gone!" into "right, the cut's from 9, let me fill water and charge up." That foresight is the whole point of MyEB.
